As of the 2011 census, 97.25% of the population spoke Chhattisgarhi and 1.45% Hindi as their first language.

Mungeli district lies in the central part of Chhattisgarh and is part of the Bilaspur Division. The region is mostly plain and fertile, ideal for agriculture. It is bounded by districts like Bilaspur, Kawardha (Kabirdham), and Janjgir-Champa. The district has a tropical climate, with hot summers, moderate rainfall during the monsoon season, and mild winters. The Maniyar and Tesua Rivers flow through the region, supporting both irrigation and local biodiversity.

The economy of Mungeli is largely agricultural, with the majority of the population engaged in farming and allied activities. Paddy (rice) is the main crop, along with wheat, maize, pulses, and oilseeds. The region benefits from traditional irrigation methods and small reservoirs. In addition to agriculture, minor forest produce, animal husbandry, and small-scale industries also contribute to the local economy. The presence of limestone and dolomite deposits in nearby areas opens up potential for mineral-based industries.

Mungeli district reflects the rich folk culture of Chhattisgarh. Local festivals such as Hareli, Pola, Teeja, and Diwali are celebrated with enthusiasm. Folk songs and dances like Raut Nacha and Panthi are an important part of village life. The dominant language is Chhattisgarhi, spoken in a unique local dialect, while Hindi is understood and used in formal communication and education. Cultural fairs and village markets play a central role in the social life of the district.

Mungeli has several religious and historical sites that attract visitors. Madku Dweep, located on the Shivnath River, is an ancient island with archaeological and spiritual significance due to the 10th–11th century temple ruins. Setganga is another important pilgrimage center, known for its sacred kund (pond) and annual religious fairs. The district is also close to the Achanakmar Wildlife Sanctuary, a rich biodiversity reserve and part of the Achanakmar-Amarkantak Biosphere Reserve.

Mungeli is witnessing gradual growth in infrastructure and education. It has several government and private schools, along with institutions for higher education in arts, commerce, and science. Development in roads, rural electrification, and healthcare facilities is ongoing. The district is well-connected by road to Bilaspur, a major city and rail hub, which boosts trade and access to services. Government schemes are being implemented to promote digital education, women's health, and skill development.
